Raul Mondesi was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a tear in his right quadriceps muscle after just eight games with the injury-riddled Angels.
The 34-year-old outfielder is 4 for 34 since signing with Anaheim as a free agent, after the Pirates terminated his contract on May 19.
The Angels, Mondesi's fifth major league team, are paying him $1.75 million this season. When they signed the 12-year veteran and two-time Gold Glove winner, Manager Mike Scioscia said: "We're confident he's going to go out and not be a risk, injury-wise."
* PUJOLS PRACTICES: Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols ran for about 10 minutes and took part in a ground-ball drill, his first time on the field since injuring his left hamstring last weekend. He could play this weekend.
* SOSA SORE: Cubs OF Sammy Sosa will go on his first injury rehabilitation assignment since 1992 when his sore back feels better. He has been on the disabled list since May 16 with a sprained ligament brought on by two violent sneezes.
* CUBAN DEFECTS: 1B-OF Kendry Morales, considered by some to be Cuba's top young player, has defected to the United States, his stepfather said.
* NO. 1 SIGNS: High school SS Matt Bush, the first player taken in the draft, signed with the Padres, earning a $3.15 million signing bonus.
