The Chicago Bears signed fourth-round draft pick Leon Joe to a four-year contract. The former Maryland linebacker was the 112th selection overall in April's NFL draft. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder had a career-high 112 tackles last year.

George Mason signed Athletic Director Tom O'Connor to a contract extension through 2009. . . .

Tom Brands, a three-time NCAA wrestling champion and 1996 Olympic gold medalist, was named coach at Virginia Tech. Brands spent the past 12 years as an assistant at national powerhouse Iowa, his alma mater. During that time, he was part of seven national championship teams and 23 individual national champions. . . .

Penn State wide receiver Maurice Humphrey was sentenced to three to 12 months in prison for assaulting his former girlfriend and her friend, both track athletes at the school. Humphrey will receive almost two months credit for time served -- two days spent in jail following his arrest and 48 days spent in a Reading, Pa., rehabilitation clinic. . . .
