The Mighty Ducks traded goalie Martin Gerber to Carolina yesterday for defenseman Tomas Malec and a third-round pick in this year's draft.

Malec had seven goals and 13 assists in 74 games for Lowell of the AHL last season. He was originally drafted by Florida in the third round of the 2001 draft.

Gerber had an 11-12-4 record in 32 games for Anaheim last season, with a 2.26 goals against average and .918 save percentage. . . .

Defenseman Ken Klee and forward Darcy Tucker re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, agreeing to multiyear deals.

Klee played in 66 games, finishing with four goals and 29 points. Tucker had 21 goals and 11 assists in 64 games.

Cornerback Eric Kelly was released by the Minnesota Vikings after failing to report for the final week of offseason workouts and asking for his release.

Tight end Steve Farmer and linebacker Jeff Mack also were released. The team also signed cornerback Oliver Celestin.


Utah State hired Randall Spetman as athletic director. Spetman had retired as the Air Force Academy's AD in October. . . .

Cheryl Levick was hired as athletic director at Saint Louis University. Levick spent the last four years at Santa Clara, where she became the first female athletic director in the West Coast Conference in 2000.
