The Diamondbacks activated Shane Reynolds from the 60-day disabled list yesterday and started him against the Padres.

Reynolds had not pitched for the Diamondbacks, who signed him as a free agent on Dec. 23. The 36-year-old right-hander had 277 previous starts with the Astros and Braves.

Reynolds spent the first three months of the season on the disabled list because of inflammation in his right rotator cuff. He made two rehab starts with Class AA El Paso and five with Class AAA Tucson, pitching seven scoreless innings in the last one on Wednesday.

"He threw all of his pitches," Manager Bob Brenly said. "We saw his velocity creep back up into the high eighties, and we're anxious to get him out there on the mound."

C Alan Zinter, who has a foot injury, was placed on the 60-day DL to open a 40-man roster spot, and the team optioned reliever Greg Aquino to Tucson.

* OUT: The Royals placed 3B Joe Randa on the 15-day disabled list with torn cartilage in his right knee. He will have arthroscopic surgery today and will be sidelined for about a month, GM Allard Baird said.
