Former Auburn baseball assistant Tom Slater was hired as head coach of the Tigers.
Slater, who replaces the fired Steve Renfroe, spent last season as an assistant at Florida after three years as head coach at Virginia Military Institute.
The New Orleans Hornets hired NBA Hall of Famer Willis Reed as vice president of basketball operations. Reed, 62, who led the New York Knicks to NBA titles in 1970 and '73, was an adviser for the Knicks last season.
The Green Bay Packers signed wide receiver Robert Ferguson to a five-year contract extension. Ferguson, a second-round pick in 2001, started 12 games in 2003. He had 38 catches for 520 yards and four touchdowns. . . .

The Dallas Stars acquired forward Jaroslav Svoboda from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2005 draft. Svoboda had three goals and an assist in 33 games for Carolina last season.
