Two summer leagues await the 19 members of the Washington Wizards' summer roster, which the team announced yesterday.
The team will participate in one five-game session in Orlando at the RDV Sportsplex from July 6 to 10 and in another at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas from July 13 to 18.
Highlights of the roster include two former NCAA champions, Maryland's Steve Blake and Connecticut's Taliek Brown, and a few members of the Wizards' regular season roster, including Blake, Jarvis Hayes and Jared Jeffries. Hayes averaged 9.6 points during the 2003-2004 regular season, Blake scored 5.9 and Jeffries contributed 5.7.
Three unsigned seniors will be on the team: Brown, Kentucky's Gerald Fitch and Wisconsin-River Falls's Rich Melzer.
"This is a great time for some of the younger players on our roster to develop, and it is an opportunity for us to see free agent players who may have an opportunity to make NBA rosters next season," Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement.
The summer league squad will get just three days of practice over the weekend before heading to Orlando, where the team will begin play against the Miami Heat. The Wizards also will see the New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers.
In Las Vegas the Wizards will meet a few repeat clubs from Orlando and will add a game against the Phoenix Suns. Two of Washington's games from Las Vegas, on July 13 against the Suns and July 15 against the Magic, will be televised on NBA TV.
