Bowie outfielders Val Majewski and Keith Reed, pitchers Dave Crouthers and Jacobo Sequea, first baseman Walter Young and catcher Eli Whiteside were named to the Class AA Eastern League all-star team yesterday.
Fans voted for Majewski and Crouthers and league representatives selected the others. All will play for the South Division against the North Division all-stars in the July 14 game, to be played at Prince George's Stadium.
Through Tuesday, Majewski, 23, is hitting . 299 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI and has a team-best 80 hits.
"When the fans vote you in it feels like you're doing something to impress them," said Majewski, who was a Class A South Atlantic League all-star last year. "It's a long season. You try not to worry about stats, but you see the numbers every day. Hopefully the work I put in in the offseason pays off and the numbers will show for it."
Crouthers, 24, is 5-4 with a 4.73 ERA. The right-hander's 74 strikeouts are third-best in the league, and he has struck out nearly one batter per inning (78 innings pitched). Moreover, Crouthers has walked only 36 batters and hitters are batting a collective .251 against him.
Young, 24, leads the team in RBI (54) and his team-best 18 home runs are third in the league. Reed, 25, has a .321 average, third in the league. Sequea, 22, leads the league in saves (16) and has a team-best 2.06 ERA. Whiteside, 24, is hitting .285 with 11 homers and 34 RBI, a big jump from an injury-plagued 2003 in which he hit .204.
Bowie Manager Dave Trembley and his staff will coach the South Division squad.
The Class AA All-Star Game used to provide fans a glimpse at rising stars from the Eastern League, Texas League and Southern League. But last year the three-league showcase was scrapped because of travel costs, leaving the Eastern League to play an intraleague contest.
Note: Highly touted right-handed pitcher and Severna Park native Gavin Floyd, a first-round pick of the Phillies in 2001, was named a South Division all-star. Floyd has a 2.54 ERA for Reading, second best in the league.
