George Steinbrenner's interest in Randy Johnson could end up costing him.
The commissioner's office said it was reviewing remarks the Yankees owner made about the Diamondbacks ace this week to see if there was any tampering.
"God, who wouldn't love to have Randy Johnson?" Steinbrenner told Sporting News Radio on Wednesday. "He's a dominator and we'd love to have him. . . . We'll have to see what happens as the deadline gets closer."
* WOOD HIT BY LINE DRIVE: Cubs RHP Kerry Wood got a scare when he was hit under the chin by a line drive yesterday in his final simulated game before an anticipated minor league rehab assignment next week.
Wood, on the disabled list with a sore triceps muscle, deflected a line drive with his glove but the ball clipped him under the chin. He shook it off and continued his outing. He hopes to return to the Cubs' rotation on July 10 or July 11.
* LIKE GIAMBI, LIKE BROWN: Yankees RHP Kevin Brown has had intestinal parasites diagnosed, joining Jason Giambi as the second member of the team to test positive for the ailment. Brown, out with a bad back, thinks his recovery has been slowed by the parasites.
* DISABLED LIST: The Dodgers placed RHP Hideo Nomo on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right rotator cuff. . . .
The Mariners put C Miguel Olivo on the 15-day disabled list, one day after doctors fitted him with a stent to remove kidney stones.
