Luis Fabiano scored a last-minute goal last night as Brazil defeated Chile, 1-0, at Copa America, the prestigious South American tournament being played in Peru.

Fabiano headed in the game-winner off a corner kick in the 90th minute.

Chile had a great chance to go ahead in the first half when Sebastian Gonzalez took a penalty kick in the 24th minute. He was successful, but his goal was disallowed by Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez because Chilean players entered the area before the kick.

Gonzalez sent his second shot over the crossbar.

Both teams played offensively, but failed to capitalized on their scoring chances until Fabiano's goal in the last minute.

Earlier, reserve Julio dos Santos scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute, lifting Paraguay over Costa Rica, 1-0.

Santos scored after veteran midfielder Carlos Humberto Paredes was taken down inside the box. Santos put his shot to the right side as Costa Rica's goalkeeper dived the other way.

Both teams played mostly defensively throughout the match, failing to create many clear scoring chances.
