The Mariners designated slumping 1B John Olerud and C Pat Borders for assignment.
Seattle has 10 days to release, trade or send Olerud to the minors.
Olerud, 35, has a no-trade clause in his contract and recently turned down a deal to the Giants. A career .295 hitter and a former AL batting champion, Olerud was hitting .245 with five HR and 22 RBI.
Olerud said he turned down going to San Francisco because he didn't want to leave Seattle, his native city.
* BROWN HAMMERED: Yankees RHP Kevin Brown, sidelined by a strained back and an intestinal parasite, allowed five runs and seven hits in two innings in a minor league rehabilitation assignment with Class AA Trenton.
Portland batted around in the first inning against the 39-year-old Brown, who has a 7-1 record with a 4.13 ERA in 13 starts for the Yankees.
"There's no [back] pain. I don't know how to explain it," Brown said. "I would describe it as someone taking the light switch and flipping it off."
Brown's next rehab start will likely be for Class A Tampa on Tuesday.
* REDS ACTIVATE CASEY: Reds 1B Sean Casey (strained calf) was activated from the disabled list. He was hitting .352 with 15 HR when he was hurt.
