Tangela Smith scored 17 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Sacramento Monarchs to an 81-71 win over the visiting Washington Mystics last night.
DeMya Walker added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists for the Monarchs, who won for the second time in two days.
Washington rookie Alana Beard scored 27 points and Chamique Holdsclaw, the WNBA's second-leading scorer, had 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Mystics have lost three of four.
Led by a season-high 12 points from rookie Rebekkah Brunson (Georgetown), the Monarchs' reserves scored 37 points. Yolanda Griffith added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Trailing the opening half, the Monarchs went on a 17-4 run early in the second, erasing a seven-point deficit to take a 60-54 lead on a reverse layup by Ruthie Bolton with 8 minutes 37 seconds remaining.
* SHOCK 77, SILVER STARS 71: Ruth Riley led Detroit with 21 points in Auburn Hills, Mich. Deanna Nolan scored 19 and Swin Cash added 18 points and 12 rebounds, ending the Shock's three-game losing streak.
Shannon Johnson had a season-high 25 points for San Antonio (6-15), which has lost eight of its last 10 games.
Cheryl Ford finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds for the defending champion Shock (10-11).
Detroit struggled for much of the first half until a late 14-1 run produced a 40-31 halftime lead.
San Antonio pulled to within three on Agnieszka Bibrzycka's three-pointer early in the second half before the Shock went on a 12-0 run. Nolan scored seven points and Riley added four in the surge.
Detroit led by as many as 17, but San Antonio rallied to within 66-64 on Johnson's three-pointer with 3:51 left.
The Silver Stars had a chance to tie in the final minute, but Elaine Powell stole the ball from Johnson.
* LIBERTY 75, STING 58: Elena Baranova had 19 points to lead host New York.
Crystal Robinson scored 14 points and Becky Hammon added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for the Liberty, which shot 50 percent from the field.
Baranova contributed to the Liberty's hot hand, going 7 for 13 from the field. New York shot 8 for 18 on three-pointers, led by Robinson's four.
Tammy Sutton-Brown led the Sting with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Dawn Staley and rookie Kelly Mazzante added 11 points apiece.
The Liberty led 40-31 at halftime and had a 13-0 run early in the second half to take a 20-point lead. Charlotte then scored eight straight points during a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to 58-47, but that was the closest margin.
In the first half, New York went on a 17-3 run for a 12-point lead, their biggest of the half.
New York (10-11) won for the third time in five games, but just the fourth in 14 since opening the season 6-1.
* LYNX 63, MERCURY 60: Katie Smith scored 33 points to lead visiting Minnesota. Phoenix lost its fifth straight.
Smith, who had 19 points in the second half, scored the last six points in the final minute for the Lynx, who have won seven of eight.
