Mark Prior threw a five-inning, 73-pitch simulated game yesterday and hopes to return to the Cubs' rotation Sunday against the Phillies.

The right-hander felt no pain in his tender right elbow while throwing to teammates Jose Macias, Paul Bako and Tom Goodwin before a game against the Cardinals. Macias tagged him for a homer.

Prior was originally scheduled to start yesterday, but skipped his turn so he could test the elbow and not risk another premature exit.

After missing the first two months of the season with a sore Achilles' tendon and elbow, Prior made eight starts. But he had to leave last Thursday's game against the Brewers in the second inning when he felt discomfort in the elbow.

Tests taken Friday revealed no structural damage and he had inflammation of the lining in the bone of his elbow diagnosed.

* HALLADAY ON DL: Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and Toronto activated OF Frank Catalanotto to fill his roster spot. Halladay, last season's AL Cy Young Award winner, has a tired right shoulder that won't improve without rest. He is just 7-7 with a 4.35 ERA this season.

* EXCUSED: Rangers RHP Joaquin Benoit was placed on the bereavement list so he could return to the Dominican Republic after the death of his grandmother.
