The Red Sox obtained IF Ricky Gutierrez from the Cubs yesterday for a player to be named or cash.

Earlier in the day, Boston put IF Pokey Reese on the disabled list with a strained rib cage. In addition, starting SS Nomar Garciaparra still is working himself back after missing much of the first half of the season.

Gutierrez, 34, was hitting .368 with 10 RBI in 20 games for AAA Iowa. He signed a minor league contract with Chicago on June 14.

Boston also recalled 3B Kevin Youkilis from AAA Pawtucket.

The Red Sox also recalled LHP Mark Malaska and optioned RHP Joe Nelson to Pawtucket.

* MEDICAL UPDATES: Yankees SS Derek Jeter has a small fracture in his right hand that kept him out of last night's game, yet he does not need surgery and will not wear a cast. Jeter was hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Victor Zambrano on Tuesday. . . Mets C-1B Mike Piazza's left wrist is sprained from his collision with the Marlins' Juan Pierre at first base on Tuesday night and is not severely injured.

* SUSPENSION ENDS: The Padres lifted the suspension of overall No. 1 draft pick Matt Bush, who was arrested last month and accused of assaulting a bouncer removing him from a bar. Padres GM Kevin Towers did not say why the team ended the suspension of the 18-year-old shortstop.
