The men's basketball teams from George Washington and American will open their seasons in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament and, with the help of what would be a significant upset, could meet in the second round.
George Washington will play Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15. The Demon Deacons' top nine scorers -- including national player of the year candidate Chris Paul -- are back after reaching the round of 16 of the NCAA tournament last March.
With Paul, the point guard, fellow guard Justin Gray and center Eric Williams leading the way, Wake will almost certainly be ranked in the top five nationally in the preseason.
American plays at defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond on the same night. The winners of those two games are slated to meet Nov. 18 at a site to be determined. GW hasn't appeared in the Preseason NIT since 1994, and American will be making its first appearance in the 16-team tournament.
Other first-round games -- all Nov. 15 or 16 -- will be Niagara at Providence, Quinnipiac at Penn, San Diego at Arizona, Wright State at Tulsa, Binghamton at Michigan and the College of Charleston at Colorado. The semifinals and final will be Nov. 24-26 in New York.
