Yankees 1B Jason Giambi had a benign tumor diagnosed but is expected to return to the team later this season after undergoing treatment.

The Yankees announced last night that Giambi was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be treated immediately. The team, citing privacy issues, declined to divulge where the tumor is or what type of treatment Giambi will undergo. Yankees Manager Joe Torre said he didn't believe surgery would be necessary.

Giambi, a former AL most valuable player, is batting .221 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI. He's been feeling fatigued virtually all season, and had a parasite diagnosed on June 29.

For Benson and minor league IF Jeff Keppinger, the Mets traded IF Ty Wigginton, highly touted minor league RHP Matt Peterson and IF Jose Bautista to the Pirates. The Mets got Bautista earlier in the day from Kansas City for minor league C Justin Huber.

* MONDESI DROPPED: The Angels terminated Raul Mondesi's contract after the enigmatic outfielder failed to show up for a rehabilitation appointment in Southern California.

* KENT SUSPENDED: Astros 2B Jeff Kent was suspended for three games and Seattle pitching coach Bryan Price was suspended for one for their outbursts following ejections earlier in the week.
