Astros LHP Andy Pettitte was scratched from his scheduled start yesterday in Cincinnati because of elbow soreness.
Pettitte had to leave his start last Monday against the Diamondbacks because of a sore left elbow. He threw on Thursday and felt good, so Manager Phil Garner kept him scheduled to start.
He was still listed as the starter yesterday morning, but Garner switched to Darren Oliver after the Reds finished a 3-2, 13-inning victory, completing a game that had been suspended overnight because of rain.
Pettitte (6-4), one of the Astros' big offseason acquisitions along with Roger Clemens, has started only 13 games because of injuries.
* GIANT ON THE DL: Giants RHP Jerome Williams was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his pitching arm.
The Giants recalled RHP Merkin Valdez from Class AA Norwich to take Williams's spot.
Williams, 9-7 with a 4.41 ERA, left his start Friday night against the Cardinals midway through the fourth inning. After an MRI exam, team doctors recommended more tests and rest.
* GERMAN RETURNS: IF Esteban German (strained muscle, right side) was activated from the 15-day disabled list.
To make room for German, the A's assigned IF Ramon Castro to Class AA Midland.
