Diamondbacks LF Luis Gonzalez, bothered by a sore throwing arm all season, had reconstructive surgery on his right elbow yesterday.
A tendon was transplanted in the area of the torn ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow. The Diamondbacks said Gonzalez should be able to start physical therapy in three to four weeks.
An MRI exam last October found a 50 percent tear in the ligament but Gonzalez elected to play through the pain.
* BELLHORN'S THUMB MAKES 10: IF Mark Bellhorn was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Red Sox, who added OF Dave Roberts to the roster.
Bellhorn fractured his left thumb on Sunday in Minnesota when he was hit by a pitch from Twins closer Joe Nathan in the ninth inning. He is the 10th member of the Red Sox currently on the DL.
* OTHER INJURIES: The Mariners placed closer Eddie Guardado on the 15-day disabled list with a tired left shoulder. LHP Matt Thornton will be recalled from Class AAA Tacoma today. . . .
The Expos placed RHP Zach Day on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right middle finger. . . .
The Marlins placed closer Armando Benitez on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The move is retroactive to July 23.
