Stairs first felt the strain during batting practice Friday, but said he thought he just needed to get loose. In his first at-bat against the Angels, he missed a curveball and felt more discomfort. He struck out and finished 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.

The injury is on the back side of his rib cage, which affects the follow-through of his swing. Stairs had an MRI exam yesterday, which revealed no tear or bleeding.

Stairs has hit .263 in 89 games, with 15 home runs and 49 RBI.

Kevin Millar replaced Ramirez in left field and as the No. 3 hitter for the Red Sox.
