Mets LHP Tom Glavine lost his two front upper teeth in an automobile accident yesterday afternoon while going from LaGuardia Airport to nearby Shea Stadium in a taxicab.

Glavine, who had stitches for a cut lower lip, was scheduled to be released from a hospital last night and will miss his start tonight against Houston.

The accident occurred as Glavine headed to the ballpark for New York's game against the Astros. He was leaving LaGuardia in a taxi that collided with a sport-utility vehicle. Glavine was conscious when taken by ambulance to NYU Medical Center in Manhattan. The driver of the taxi and the other vehicle were both uninjured, police said.

* SEASON-ENDING INJURIES: Mariners closer Eddie Guardado has a torn rotator cuff and probably will need surgery; he is expected to miss eight to 12 months. The Mariners also said RHP Rafael Soriano has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will require surgery. . . .

Tigers 2B Fernando Vina is out for the season with a partial tendon tear in his left knee that may require surgery.

* MILLWOOD OUT INDEFINITELY: Phillies RHP Kevin Millwood, on the disabled list because of a sprained ligament and a strained tendon in his pitching elbow, won't throw for at least three or four weeks.

* ROYALS DEMOTE BERROA: The Royals sent struggling AL rookie of the year Angel Berroa to the minors. He was batting .249 with five homers and 30 RBI. Last year, the shortstop hit .287 with 17 HRs and 73 RBI.
