Mets C Mike Piazza was placed on the 15-day disabled list yesterday because of inflammation in his left knee, leaving New York without its best hitter as the team tries to stay on the edge of the NL playoff race.
The move was made retroactive to Aug. 7. Piazza had an MRI exam on Tuesday and received a shot in his knee.
The 11-time all-star is batting .276 with 17 homers and 44 RBI this season but has slumped badly since June.
* CHANGE IN TIME: With Hurricane Charley approaching Florida, today's game between the Cardinals and Marlins was switched to a daytime start.
The game will now begin at 1:05 p.m., the Marlins said. It had been scheduled for 7:05 p.m., when the forecast called for an 80 percent chance of rain.
* MUSSINA THROWS: Yankees RHP Mike Mussina pitched three scoreless innings in a rehabilitation start for Class AAA Columbus.
Mussina, who went on the disabled list July 6 because of a stiff right elbow, allowed two hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter while throwing 46 pitches -- 29 strikes.
* MOVES: The Indians placed INF Lou Merloni on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed right elbow. . . . The Royals recalled OF Aaron Guiel from Class AAA Omaha and placed OF Dee Brown on the 15-day disabled list with a left ribcage injury. . . The Rockies acquired minor league LHPs Luis Martinez and Chris Naveson from St. Louis as part of Larry Walker deal.
