Major League Baseball -- Suspended Houston Astrosmanager Phil Garner for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount for inappropriate actions directed at umpire Brian Knight during a game on Aug. 7.

Baltimore Orioles -- Announced C Ken Huckaby cleared waivers and was sent outright to AAA Ottawa.

Chicago Cubs -- Acquired LHP Eric Eckenstahler from the Detroit Tigers to complete an earlier trade. Agreed to terms with RHP Grant Johnson. Announced RHP LaTroy Hawkins's appeal of his three-game suspension was rejected, but his fine was reduced from $3,000 to $2,000.

Kansas City Royals -- Claimed RHP Matt Kinney off waivers from Milwaukee. Designated C Mike Tonis for assignment.

New York Mets -- Placed INF Jose Reyes on the 15-day DL.

San Francisco Giants -- Released SS Neifi Perez. Recalled RHP Kevin Correia from AAA Fresno.

Detroit Pistons -- Re-signed G Lindsey Hunter.

Los Anagles Lakers -- Acquired F Jumaine Jones from the Boston Celtics instead of G Marcus Banks and a second-round draft pick to amend an Aug. 6 trade.

NFL

Houston Texans -- Signed DE Bryce Wyatt. Waived DT Ifo Pili.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Placed QB Charlie Batch on the injured reserve list. Signed QB Kurt Kittner.

NHL

New Jersey Devils -- Signed G Ari Ahonen, G Scott Clemmensen, D Bobby Allen, D Ray Schultz, D Steven Spencer, F Brett Clouthier, F Ryan Murphy and F Pascal Rheaume.

New York Islanders -- Signed D Richard Seeley.
