Cubs RHP Kerry Wood's appeal was rejected yesterday and he will begin serving his five-game suspension today.
Wood was fined and suspended for angrily confronting umpire Eric Cooper on April 17. Wood initially served the suspension in May -- but it was reinstated when he was placed on the disabled list for a period covering the penalty.
Wood became angry with Cooper on April 17 after walking Reds OF Adam Dunn on a 3-2 pitch in the ninth inning. Dunn later scored the go-ahead run on a double by Wily Mo Pena, leading Chicago Manager Dusty Baker to pull Wood. After Baker made the pitching change, Wood began screaming at Cooper before he was ejected.
* ALSO SERVING TIME: White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for arguing with umpires during an Aug. 9 game against the Indians.
* SPENCER, HIRED: Recently released OF Shane Spencer rejoined the Yankees, signing a minor league contract after working out at their spring training complex.
Spencer played for the Yankees from 1998 to 2002 and was let go by the Mets earlier this month.
* GRIFFEY HAS SURGERY: Reds OF Ken Griffey Jr. had surgery to repair his torn right hamstring and is expected to return for spring training.
* MINORS HAPPENING: Cardinals OF Ray Lankford accepted a minor league assignment to Class AAA Memphis, nine days after leaving the team to consider his career options.
