Astros LHP Andy Pettitte's season came to an end yesterday when the team announced he would have surgery on his troublesome left elbow.

Pettitte was put on the 15-day DL for the third time this season. James Andrews will do the surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon.

Pettitte, 32, will start rehabilitation the day after surgery.

* TRADE: The Dodgers acquired LHP Scott Stewart from the Indians, one day after finding out setup man Darren Dreifort may be lost for the year.

Stewart was 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in 23 games.

* FAN SENTENCED: A fan who ran onto the field during a Mets game was sentenced to eight weekends in jail and ordered to stay out of Shea Stadium for three years.

John McCarthy, 38, of Totowa, N.J., pleaded guilty to interfering with a pro sports event.

* NO SURGERY: Yankees RF Gary Sheffield will not need surgery on his ailing left shoulder, but said he'll likely get two more cortisone shots to help alleviate the pain.

* GIAMBI SETBACK: Yankees 1B Jason Giambi continued his upper body workout and ran in an indoor pool, one day after mildly straining his groin.

"It's from being underworked," he said. "It's nothing serious."
