Expos 2B Jose Vidro will have season-ending surgery Sept. 8 to repair recurring patellar tendinitis in his right knee.

Vidro, a three-time all-star, chose to undergo the procedure after a recent MRI exam on his knee, which has bothered him over parts of the last two seasons and caused him to miss four straight starts, including yesterday's game against Los Angeles.

Through Tuesday, Vidro -- who signed a four-year, $30 million contract extension May 14 -- was hitting .294 with 24 doubles, 14 homers and 60 RBI in 110 games. He will remain on the active roster until Sept. 1.

* CAPUANO OUT: Brewers LHP Chris Capuano was put on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow, and Milwaukee called up RHP Pedro Liriano from Class AAA Indianapolis.

Capuano gave up seven runs and six hits in 11/3 innings Tuesday night against the Cubs, his shortest outing this season. He's been bothered by the elbow all season, and said after the game that he had hurt it again during the game.

* METS MOVES: The Mets signed free agent OF Brian Buchanan and optioned relief pitcher Heath Bell to Class AAA Norfolk.
