LHP Rick Ankiel, the runner-up in rookie of the year voting in 2000 who has been plagued by wildness and arm trouble for much of the past four years, was among three players added to the Cardinals' roster.

Ankiel and OF Ray Lankford were activated from the 15-day disabled list before tonight's game against the Padres, while C Cody McKay was recalled from Class AAA Memphis.

Ankiel, 25, underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery in his pitching elbow in July 2003. He made six rehabilitation starts in the Cardinals' minor league system this season, going 2-1 with a 0.76 ERA. He struck out 23 in 232/3 innings while walking just two.

* COLANGELO STEPS DOWN: Jerry Colangelo gave up his role of chief executive of the Diamondbacks to former sports agent Jeff Moorad three months earlier than planned. Colangelo, who ran the franchise since its inception in 1995, will stay on as the team's chairman through 2005.

* GALARRAGA BACK IN BIGS: The Angels purchased the contract of 43-year-old Andres Galarraga from Class AAA Salt Lake. They had signed him to a minor league contract on Aug. 4.

Galarraga played in 25 games with the Stingers, batting .304 with four homers and 19 RBI. In November he was diagnosed with a recurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which caused him to miss the 1999 season. He underwent surgery in November and a stem cell transplant in February.
