Northwestern expected to open its football season this Saturday. Spingarn thought it was going to have a preseason scrimmage. Either way, the teams will not be meeting on the field.
Northwestern Coach Bryan Pierre said yesterday that he was called by a member of Spingarn's staff and told the Green Wave did not have enough players to field a team this weekend. Spingarn Athletic Director Bruce Williams said the teams never had a contract to play a game and were only supposed to have a "low-key scrimmage."
Pierre said there was no contract because of an administrative problem, but that there was no question in his mind that the teams were scheduled to play a game.
"The scrimmages have got to be done," Pierre said. "It's playing time."
Walker Named Interim Coach
Friendly has hired Bryan Walker to be its interim boys' basketball coach, Friendly Athletic Director Pat Harris-Paxson said. Harris-Paxson declined to comment why the school hired Walker -- its junior varsity coach -- to be an interim coach in place of Gerald Moore, referring questions to school principal Ed Ryans, who declined to comment.
Moore, who confirmed he has been reassigned from his position as a teacher at the Fort Washington school, said he did not know why the school hired an interim coach and is planning to guide the two-time defending state champion Patriots this season.
Moore declined further comment.

The Vikings went 18-0 and claimed their third consecutive Maryland 3A/2A title. . . .
North Stafford forward Chris Darnell has unofficially committed to play basketball for William & Mary. He averaged 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds as a junior last season.
