Carroll Holmes, the athletic director at Carroll High for the past 15 years, stepped down to pursue other opportunities, the school announced yesterday. Holmes will be replaced on an interim basis by Robert Ager, chairman of the school's physical education department. A search committee is being formed to find Holmes's successor.

Holmes, 49, resigned as boys' basketball coach at the Northeast Washington private school in April 2003. In 22 seasons, his teams went 390-222, including a pair of Catholic league championships and two Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament titles.

All-American Bowlers

Eleanor Roosevelt quarterback Derrick Williams and St. John's linebacker Rico McCoy have been selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, game organizer Tom Lemming said. Generally considered to be the nation's top high school football all-star game, it will be played Jan. 15 in San Antonio.

Hat Trick for Lee

Magruder freshman Justin Lee scored the first three goals of his varsity career in the final 20 minutes as the Colonels boys' soccer team defeated Hammond, 3-1, in Columbia.

Lee scored off a header with 17 minutes left, then converted passes into goals with 10 and six minutes remaining to give Magruder (2-0) the win. The three shots were Lee's only attempts of the second half.

"He's been starting for me all preseason, but he's just a freshman -- I didn't expect him to score three goals," Coach Scott Alexander said. "Today he was a freshman who took it upon himself to play like a senior." . . .

Moon Gho and Mike Hassett scored as Reservoir defeated host Laurel, 2-0, in the season opener for both teams. . . .

Senior Allee Levey and junior Morgan Blanchard had two goals apiece as Sidwell Friends defeated Washington International, 4-2. . . .

Annesia Faulkner had four goals and Morgan Vandenberge added two more as visiting Pallotti defeated Long Reach, 7-0, in a girls' soccer match in Columbia. Goalkeeper Stephanie Sillers had five saves for the Panthers (2-0).

Magruder Nets a Win

Junior Taylor Hergott had 10 kills and senior Sarah Dougherty had nine aces as Magruder defeated Rockville, 25-12, 25-12, 21-25, 25-9, in a Montgomery County volleyball match.

Dougherty, the Magruder setter, added 13 assists to help the Colonels (2-0) win their 17th consecutive regular season match, dating from the next-to-last game of the 2002 season. . . .

Casey Tang scored in overtime to give Glenelg Country a 1-0 win over McDonogh School in a field hockey game. Agata Kaczanowski had 11 saves for Glenelg Country. Ellie Atkins assisted Tang's goal. . . .

Lynn Brownlie scored twice as Reservoir's field hockey team beat Oakland Mills, 2-0. The Gators improved to 2-0.
