Jeff Long birdied the final three holes to shoot 4-under-par 32 as Westfield beat Oakton, 138-156, in a Virginia AAA Concorde District match yesterday at Pleasant Valley Golf Course. Michael Spear and Zach Spees each shot 33 for Westfield, and Tim Vigotsky shot 40 as the Bulldogs shot 4 under as a team. Long and Spear had five birdies apiece and Spees made three birdies and an eagle.
Carrington to Indiana
Liberty senior running back Justin Carrington (6-1, 200) orally committed Wednesday to play football at Indiana University.
Carrington, an honorable-mention All-Met in 2003, totaled 1,131 yards and 14 touchdowns on 119 attempts last season, despite splitting carries with All-Met A.J. Brown (Syracuse). Carrington's 9.5 yards per carry ranked second among all Washington-area rushers over the 1,000-yard mark.
"Everyone in my family is excited about me having a chance to play in the Big Ten," Carrington said.
Lambert Leads Eagles
National Cathedral junior forward Hilary Lambert scored three goals in a 6-0 victory over Holy Cross in field hockey. Senior midfielder Simmy Martin and junior forward Morgan Swagart each added a goal and an assist for the Eagles. . . .
Wootton senior forward Susie Grace scored off a pass from junior forward Neha Bhatia with 45 seconds left in overtime to gave the Patriots a 3-2 victory over Magruder in a Montgomery County 4A game.
Holy Cross Holds On
Holy Cross won the first two games, then withstood a comeback to defeat Elizabeth Seton in a five-game WCAC volleyball match, 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 13-25, 15-10. Sophomore Angie Duran had 10 kills for the Tartans. Junior outside hitter Hilary Tutman added nine kills, and senior mid front Catlin Kennedy had four kills. . . .
Georgetown Day fought back from two games down to win its volleyball match at St. Andrew's, 24-26, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 16-14. Junior setter Amanda Cole led the comeback with eight aces, all in the last three games.
