The Virginia AAA Northern Region's top three rushers last week were all juniors -- Evan Royster of Westfield, Lucas Caparelli of Robinson and Darryl Thornton of Centreville. Royster carried 21 times for 235 yards, Caparelli 11 for 179 and Thornton 31 for 155. . . .

Hylton senior quarterback Tristen Simmons, who passed for almost 2,000 yards last season but lost his entire receiving corps, picked up where he left off by throwing two touchdowns to senior Carlos Segarra and one to junior Marshall Dill in a 24-7 win over Stonewall Jackson last week.

"He had an excellent first game," Bulldogs Coach Lou Sorrentino said. "It's amazing how much better he threw the ball this year than in last year's opener."

Tonight Hylton takes on Osbourn Park, a team Hylton is 14-0 against all-time. . . .

Woodbridge senior running back Derrick Holt might have circled on his calendar tonight's game against Osbourn. Playing for Woodbridge in 2002, he ran for three touchdowns against the Eagles. Playing for Gar-Field last year, he ran for two against them. . . .

In its first two varsity games, Spotsylvania County school Riverbend has already experienced the highs and the lows. The Bears dominated Atlee in their first game for a 42-8 win, but last week, Riverbend was limited to 91 yards in a 34-0 loss to Henrico.
