Occasionally over the years, Gary Williams said, people have approached him and said, "Hey, I look like you."
"I didn't see the similarities," Maryland's men's basketball coach said.
What, no finger-wagging and shaking to give instruction? No sweat perpetually pouring down their foreheads?
Next month, Williams will have a room of potential doppelgangers from which to choose. When the Terrapins host their annual "Midnight Madness" celebration Oct. 15 at Comcast Center, Maryland will hold a Gary Williams look-alike contest.
ACC fans used to do this kind of thing at Georgia Tech, where former coach Bobby Cremins's snow-white hair was all but created to be imitated. "I guess you're an easier target," Williams said, "when you have gray hair."
Want to enter? E-mail pictures of yourself -- in whatever pose and garb you deem fit -- to firstname.lastname@example.org by Oct. 10 to be eligible. The finalists will be invited to compete prior to the Terrapins' first practice later that evening.
Who might be contenders? Williams's grandsons?
"Nah," Williams said. "They look more like my daughter -- thank goodness."
Midnight Madness, which always includes a few surprises, is free to the public. Doors open at 9 p.m. The men's team will be introduced at midnight, and both the men's and women's teams will hold scrimmages. Maryland's men open the season Nov. 19 vs. Jackson State.
