Game of the Day
With Shawn Green on the bench and the Giants closing in, this afternoon's Los Angeles at San Francisco matchup would be the one to watch . . . and if you have the Season Ticket package, call us and let us know if we're right. The folks in Cable TV Land will see the Tigers and Orioles.
Player to Watch
Jason Giambi, Yankees. Through Friday, Giambi is 2 for 17 in five games since coming off the disabled list. Manager Joe Torre won't make a decision on whether the slugger will make the postseason roster until the end of the regular season. "I'm not even worried about that right now," Giambi said.
News & Notes
BROWN A 'LONG SHOT': The Yankees' Kevin Brown, who threw in the bullpen yesterday for the first time since breaking his non-pitching hand three weeks ago, is a "long shot" to pitch Sunday, Torre said.
Torre wouldn't say whether Brown would be in the playoff rotation.
"You're going to have to find somebody that you don't want to pitch," he said.
Mike Mussina, Jon Lieber, Orlando Hernandez and Esteban Loiaza all have pitched well recently. The rotation also includes Javier Vazquez, who is 1-4 since his last win Aug. 6.
ASTROS PUNISHED: Houston second baseman Jeff Kent (two games) and reliever Dan Wheeler (three games) began serving their suspensions last night in Milwaukee. Kent was ejected for arguing a called strike on July 25. Wheeler was ejected for hitting Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee with a pitch on Aug. 29.
