News & Notes
HEARING DELAYED: A judge delayed until tomorrow a hearing on who the rightful owner of Barry Bonds's 700th home run ball is, giving lawyers on both sides time to make their cases.
Steve Williams, the Giants fan who ended up with the prized ball during a melee in the left-center field bleachers at SBC Park on Sept. 17, promised San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Ronald Quidachay that he would not sell the ball before Quidachay rules on who it belongs to. The president of a Chicago-based auction company has said the ball's value is in the "six figures."
Halting the sale of the ball allows a lawsuit brought by Timothy Murphy to proceed.
If the judge ultimately declines to block the ball from being auctioned, Williams likely would be able to sell the ball immediately and the case would be over.
RED SOX ROTATION: Boston is expected to start either Curt Schilling or Pedro Martinez in Game 1 of the divisional playoffs next week. "Whoever has the start, I have my full confidence that he's able to do the job," Martinez said. "I'm really happy that we are in the stage we are with the pitching staff we have." Manager Terry Francona said the Game 1 starter likely will also pitch the fifth game, if needed. Also to be determined is who will be the third and fourth starters for the first round.
CLOSER AILING: Oakland's Octavio Dotel is dealing with mild tendinitis in his right elbow, a problem he's had in the past. It affects his velocity, but doesn't keep him from pitching. "Right now, this time of year, we really don't heal anybody," trainer Larry Davis said.
