Hayfield claimed the Virginia AAA Patriot District golf championship at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton yesterday, finishing with a four-man score of 303 and ending Robinson's run of three consecutive titles. Robinson finished second (312 strokes) .
"We played up to our expectations," Hayfield Coach James Purdham said. "I knew at the beginning of the season that I had five solid golfers."
With the victory, Hayfield (6-1) secured a berth in next week's Northern Region championship.
Robinson's Adam Farry won the individual title with an even-par 72. Hayfield's Kevin Curry, Robinson's John Buchanon and T.C. Williams's Andrew Carroll tied for second with 74.
Finger Lifts Churchill
Senior Casey Finger shot a 3-under-par 68 to lead Churchill to the team title in the Maryland 4A/3A District 2 tournament at Poolesville Golf Course.
With All-Met Ryan Wielgus shooting a 70, Billy Peel a 72 and Matt Benz a 74, the two-time defending state champions shot a tournament-record even-par 284 to beat second-place Walter Johnson by 13 strokes.
Hill Leads Flint Hill
Flint Hill senior Eric Hill scored four goals and added an assist as the Huskies defeated St. Stephen's/St. Agnes, 6-0, at home yesterday. Flint Hill, which improved to 2-4, has a starting lineup that features seven freshmen.
"Because we are young and less physical, we're forced to play the ball on the ground," Huskies Coach Chris Brown said. "We did that well [yesterday]."
