Veteran point guard Avery Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, where he'll spend more time coaching than playing.

Johnson, 39, said his main role would be to assist in the development of young players, such as point guards Jason Terry and Devin Harris. The 16-year NBA veteran also will work with center Erick Dampier, one of his teammates on the Golden State Warriors last season.

Johnson appeared in 46 games with the Warriors, averaging 4.6 points and 2.4 assists last season. He spent parts of the previous two years with the Mavericks and also played for Golden State in 1994. . . .

The Memphis Grizzlies signed restricted free agent forward Stromile Swift to a one-year deal.
