Walter Johnson senior Dennis Kwon made a 40-foot birdie putt on his first hole yesterday and shot a 2-under par 69 to take a two-shot lead in the Maryland boys' golf championships at the University of Maryland Golf Course.

Northeast senior Stephanie Connolly, a three-time All-Met and two-time state champion, shot an even-par 72 for a one-shot lead in the girls' tournament.

The state's 4A/3A schools played their first round yesterday, with 2A/1A schools set to play their first round today. The second and final round for both classifications is scheduled for tomorrow. The tournament will award one individual boys' championship, one individual girls' championship and 4A/3A and 2A/1A team champions.

Kwon will enter tomorrow with a two-stroke lead over Bowie junior Ray Hyre, who shot 71 yesterday. In the girls' tournament, Marlowe Boukis of Dulaney shot 73 and Oxon Hill's Deztany Jackson shot 76.

In the 4A/3A team tournament, Sam Hoffer's 73 led Northern to a four-player score of 305, one better than Walter Johnson at 306. Two-time defending champion Churchill is tied for fourth at 316.

Georgetown Prep Wins

Seniors Paul Coyle and Matt Wood scored two goals apiece as sixth-ranked Georgetown Prep defeated No. 10 Landon, 4-1, in an Interstate Athletic Conference boys' soccer game. . . .

Sophomore forward Nick Echeverria scored four goals yesterday to lead Potomac School past visiting Georgetown Day, 5-2. Echeverria, a converted defender, leads the team with 10 goals. . . .

Nestor Lara scored two goals, including the winner three minutes into overtime, to lead No. 3 Bethesda-Chevy Chase past host Sherwood, 2-1, in a Montgomery County boys' soccer game.
