Reggie Miller's broken left hand is worse than initial examinations revealed, and the Pacers star is now expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Miller injured his non-shooting hand in Indiana's preseason finale against the Nuggets on Friday night. Coach Rick Carlisle said after the game that Miller would miss four to six weeks.

Miller was reexamined yesterday, the latest in a long line of bad news for the Pacers this preseason.

Indiana is already without Jermaine O'Neal (strained ligament in his left foot), Jeff Foster (hip), Anthony Johnson (broken hand), David Harrison (shoulder) and Jonathan Bender (knee).

O'Neal said yesterday that team doctors have told him he could miss three to four weeks to let his foot heal.

* POTAPENKO OUT: SuperSonics starting C Vitaly Potapenko will be sidelined six weeks with a broken right hand.

Team officials said they don't think Potapenko will need surgery on the broken bone in the hand. The injury occurred during Friday night's preseason game against the Trail Blazers. Potapenko is expected to be reevaluated in a week.

Potapenko, in his ninth NBA season and his third with the Sonics, played in 65 games for Seattle last season and averaged 7.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 21.8 minutes.

* EXTENSION: Nets C Jason Collins signed a four-year, $24 million contract extension through 2008-09.
