It's the kind of opportunity that might never come along in a defensive player's lifetime: A loose ball in the end zone. Stonewall Jackson junior nose guard Scott Beitzell was fortunate enough to spot such a treasure in the second quarter of a 20-6 home win over Osbourn on Friday.
"For a lineman, it's [a dream], it really is," said Beitzell, whose recovery was the Raiders' second touchdown in a 19-second span and helped them notch a seventh victory, equaling the win total of the previous three seasons combined.
Stonewall (7-2, 4-1 in the Cedar Run District) has secured its first Virginia AAA Northwestern Region playoff berth since 1996.
If Beitzell's brother, Patrick, had his way, Scott would not have been in a Stonewall uniform to make the play. Patrick, a sophomore, attends new Battlefield High School in Haymarket and had hoped his brother would enroll there as well.
"I felt that I needed to be here since I've already been here for two years and got close with the team and all," Scott said. "He was younger, so he didn't really feel the same way. It would be nice to play with him, but you gotta do what you gotta do."
