Think it's easy to be a head coach in the Virginia AAA Northern Region? Just look at the records of 10 first-year coaches this season: they are a combined 26-64. Only three have winning records, led by Gerry Pannoni's W.T. Woodson squad at 8-1. And four teams with new coaches are winless heading into the final week of the regular season. . . .

Stuart picked up its first win of the season on Friday, defeated winless Wakefield, 30-6. It was the Raiders' first victory since defeating the Warriors in Week 9 last year. . . .

Hylton's 24-7 loss to Woodbridge on Saturday was the Bulldogs' second loss this season, equaling their total for regular season defeats the past six years. . . .

Liberty senior Justin Carrington, an Indiana recruit, became Fauquier County's all-time leading rusher Friday, upping his season total to 1,509 yards and 23 total touchdowns in the seventh-ranked Eagles' 55-6 victory over Millbrook. Carrington finished the game with 182 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries. It was more than enough to break the 1,408-yard county record that Fauquier's Kevin Cash set in 1989. . . .

Courtland clinched the AA Battlefield District title and a Virginia AA Division 4 playoff berth with a 49-6 win over Caroline on Friday, and the Cougars (5-4, 4-0) can secure a winning record this week with a nondistrict win over Jefferson Forest. The five-team Battlefield has struggled in nondistrict play this year, going 5-24 in those games; Courtland is 1-4 outside the district.
