Despite losing each of the past three weeks, T.C. Williams can finish the season on a positive note with a win Friday. It would ensure the Titans of their first non-losing season since 1996, when they finished 5-5 under Bill Allan.
After Saturday's 21-14 loss to West Springfield, the Titans (4-5) must defeat Hayfield to finish with a .500 record. They got their only win of 2003 thanks to a 20-13 victory over Hayfield in the season finale.
"It's critical for us to do that," second-year coach Greg Sullivan said. "We have to get the kids to believe they can win. We have to change the mind-set here at T.C."
T.C. Williams has equaled the number of wins it had the previous four seasons combined, and thanks to Sullivan's offseason training program and increased interest in the team, there's reason to believe the improvement will continue.
Although the Titans have shown progress at nearly every position this season, senior fullback Mike Hughes continues to stand out. He rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries against the Spartans, pushing his season total to 861 yards.
