Herndon at No. 8 Oakton
Outlook: Oakton (8-1, 3-0 AAA Concorde District) can secure the district title and the No. 3 seed in the Northern Region Division 6 playoffs with a win. A loss could complicate qualifying, especially if both Centreville and West Springfield win. Herndon (6-3, 1-2) must win and have Centreville and West Springfield lose to have a chance at making their second straight playoff appearance.
at No. 16 Westfield
Outlook: Defending AAA state champion Westfield (8-1, 2-1 Concorde District) can secure the top seed in the Northern Region Division 6 playoffs -- and home-field advantage through the state semifinals -- with a win, barring any major upsets. West Springfield (7-2, 5-1 AAA Patriot) needs a win and plenty of help to get into the playoffs for first time since 1993.
at Potomac (Va.)
Outlook: Stonewall Jackson (7-2, 4-1 AAA Cedar Run District) is already assured of a Northwestern Region Division 6 playoff berth. But the Raiders could win their first outright district title since 1984 by knocking off Potomac (6-3, 3-2). That won't be easy -- the Panthers beat Stonewall, 50-21, on Oct. 15, thanks to five touchdowns from sophomore Deante Steele, for their 10th straight win in the series. Stonewall Jackson has won three in a row since that game. Potomac's two Cedar Run losses have been in overtime against Osbourn (2-7) and Osbourn Park (3-6). The Panthers also have already clinched a playoff spot.
Gonzaga at No. 1 Good Counsel
Outlook: Although undefeated, Good Counsel hasn't advanced past the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals under Bob Milloy, and expectations are higher this year. Gonzaga (7-3) enters the postseason one week after a heartbreaking loss to St. John's, but the Eagles have found their way to the conference final in each of Coach Kenny Lucas's three seasons. Good Counsel defeated Gonzaga, 42-7, on Oct. 23.
St. John's vs. No. 3 DeMatha
at Parkdale, Saturday 1:30
Outlook: DeMatha, which has won nine conference titles since 1991, including last year's, can't afford to look past the Cadets and toward a possible rematch with Good Counsel, which halted the Stags' 17-game winning streak, 31-21, on Oct. 15. St. John's, which is coming off an emotional victory over Gonzaga, is seeking its first conference title since 1989. In the teams' regular season meeting, St. John's led 13-0 before DeMatha rallied for a 35-19 victory.
