Lamar Butler scored 16 points to lead five George Mason players in double figures last night as the Patriots defeated Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne, 69-51, in the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Memphis.

Butler (Oxon Hill) connected on 6 of 13 shots from the field as the Patriots (1-0) built a 21-point halftime lead and never let the margin get below double figures in the second half.

Jai Lewis finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for George Mason, which will play Memphis in the tournament's second round tomorrow night.

* SYRACUSE 104, NORTHERN COLORADO 54: The No. 6 Orange scored the first 24 points of the game and cruised to victory in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.

Hakim Warrick had 19 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for the Orange. Northern Colorado, in only its second season back in Division I, had not played a ranked Division I team since 1957.

Syracuse (1-0) will play Princeton (1-0) in the second round tonight.

* MISSISSIPPI STATE 53, FAIRFIELD 49: Ontario Harper scored a career-high 17 points and the No. 12 Bulldogs, playing without preseason all-American Lawrence Roberts, won in Birmingham in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Roberts, a senior forward, sat out because of a one-game suspension from the NCAA over his expenses to attend a tryout before the NBA draft.

* MEMPHIS 102, SAVANNAH STATE 40: Rodney Carney scored 21 points and the No. 24 Tigers had six players finish in double figures in an opening-round win at home in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

Virginia Women Lose

Brandi Teamer led the Cavaliers with 18 points in a 60-50 season-opening loss to Arizona State in the Women's Sports Foundation Classic tournament in Baton Rouge, La. Virginia will play Maine tonight in the consolation round.

* LSU 81, MAINE 50: Seimone Augustus scored 17 points as the No. 3 Tigers started the season with a home victory.
