There's a strong possibility that Northern Virginia powerhouses such as Westfield, Oakton, Robinson and Centreville will play some of the area's top private schools next year. The likely addition of Loudoun County schools Stone Bridge and Loudoun Valley to the AAA Northern Region -- plus the opening of a new school in Lorton -- creates an uneven number of teams (31), meaning one team must play out of region each week. . . .

The yet-to-be-named school in Lorton was accepted into the Patriot District for all sports next school year. The decision is pending approval from Virginia High School League Executive Director Ken Tilley. . . .

When Potomac (Va.) plays 10th-ranked North Stafford in a AAA Northwestern Region Division 5 semifinal tonight, the Panthers will play a team from outside the four-team Cardinal and Cedar Run districts for the first time since 2001.

"We're happy to get out of the county and stop playing the same teams over and over again," Panthers Coach Ben Stutler said. "It gets kind of monotonous." . . .

In two wins over Colonial Forge, North Stafford allowed just 15 total points, all in the second half, against a team that averaged 25 points otherwise. Massaponax was shut out by North Stafford, but it averaged 38 points in nine other games.
