Janell Burse scored 18 points and Lauren Jackson added 15 as the Seattle Storm handed the Detroit Shock its first loss of the season, 76-61, last night in Auburn Hills, Mich.

The Shock (4-1) was the only undefeated team left in the league. Seattle (5-2) has won five of six.

Seattle's Sue Bird missed the game because she broke two bones in her face in Tuesday night's loss in Connecticut. Her college and Olympic teammate, Swin Cash of Detroit, has missed the entire season recovering from a knee injury.

Betty Lennox added 13 points for Seattle. Deanna Nolan scored 23 for the Shock and rookie Kara Braxton had 15.

* MERCURY 66, SPARKS 63: Diana Taurasi scored 26 points and Plenette Pierson made four late free throws for visiting Phoenix.

Penny Taylor added a season-high 15 points as the Mercury (2-5) broke a three-game losing streak by winning in Los Angeles for the first time since July 13, 1997.

Chamique Holdsclaw led the Sparks (3-4) with 25 points and nine rebounds. Teammate Lisa Leslie added 17 points. But Los Angeles made just 14 of 25 free throws and one of eight three-point shots.
