Last night's game was the sixth straight time that Washington Mystics Coach Richie Adubato went with a starting lineup consisting of rookie Temeka Johnson at point guard, Alana Beard at shooting guard, DeLisha Milton-Jones and Charlotte Smith-Taylor at forwards and Chasity Melvin at center.
Because Beard was injured during the preseason and Milton-Jones was a late arrival after playing overseas, the Mystics had been forced to employ three different starting lineups in the season's first five games.
Fans can vote for the starters of the all-star game by going to WNBA.com. Voting continues through tomorrow. Reserves for the July 9 game, which will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut, will be selected by the league's coaches. As of yesterday, Beard ranked fifth among Eastern Conference guards in fan voting and Melvin ranked fifth among Eastern Conference centers. Despite leading the WNBA in assists and ranking second among rookies in scoring, Johnson does not rank among the top 12 Eastern Conference guards in fan voting. . . .
Friday's game at Detroit, which tips off at 7:30 p.m., will be televised on Comcast SportsNet. The Shock (5-4) is in third place in the Eastern Conference, one game behind second-place Indiana. Sunday's home game against Sacramento, which tips off at 3 p.m., will also be shown on Comcast SportsNet.
