Angels: Placed CF Steve Finley on the 15-day DL because of a strained right shoulder and activated OF Curtis Pride from the DL. Finley, a five-time Gold Glove winner, is hitting .225 with eight home runs and 39 RBI.

Tigers: Sent reliever Matt Ginter to Class AAA Toledo and purchased the contract of RHP Sean Douglass. The right-handed Ginter was 0-0 with a 5.47 ERA this season.

1917: In baseball's greatest relief effort, Ernie Shore of the Boston Red Sox relieved P Babe Ruth with nobody out in the first inning and a man on first. The base runner was caught stealing and Shore retired all 26 batters he faced to gain a 4-0 victory over the Washington Senators. Ruth walked Eddie Foster to open the game and was ejected after arguing with umpire Brick Owens.
