Kevin Reese didn't know what to say first when he called his friends.
"I'm getting married. By the way, I just got called up to the big leagues," he told some.
For others, he reversed the order.
With CF Bernie Williams struggling defensively, the Yankees purchased the contract of Reese, 27, from Class AAA Columbus yesterday and put him in the lineup against the Mets last night. Reese played left field and hit ninth, with Tony Womack shifted to center.
On Friday, he proposed to Laura Le Gallo after the Clippers' game. They plan to get married in September. They had been talking about marriage for a while but hadn't set any plans.
"I kind of surprised her," Reese said.
He went 0 for 3 Saturday against the Mets' Norfolk farm team, then found out the Yankees were bringing him up. Reese traveled to New York, and when he arrived at the ballpark the only other player in the clubhouse was RHP Carl Pavano.
His parents, Bob and Samantha Reese, took an early flight from San Diego and were to be at Yankee Stadium in time for his debut.
* ANOTHER RED OCTOBER?: The Red Sox finished 12-6 in interleague play following a 12-8 victory over the Phillies. It was their most wins in interleague play.
Meantime, Minnesota went 8-10 in interleague play and nearly was swept by Milwaukee, which is five games under .500.
* BLOWN OUT BY THE BAY: Oakland SS Bobby Crosby batted in each of the first five innings. So did C Jason Kendall and OF Mark Kotsay in Oakland's 16-0 victory over host San Francisco.
The Athletics matched the franchise record for largest margin of shutout victory. The most recent 16-0 victory came on May 23, 1959, against the White Sox -- when the Athletics were in Kansas City.
It broke the Oakland record for biggest shutout win. The previous was 15 on Aug. 30, 2001, at Baltimore.
It was the largest shutout defeat in San Francisco history and matched its biggest loss, which last happened in a 19-3 loss against Montreal on May 7, 1997.
The Giants also lost to the Cubs, 15-0, on Aug. 22, 1970.
"I don't feel sorry for any team," Crosby said.
