Mets: Purchased the contract of IF Jose Offerman from Class AAA Norfolk. . . . Chris Woodward started at first base, and Manager Willie Randolph said Woodward, Marlon Anderson and perhaps Offerman and Brian Daubach would be part of the combination used while Doug Mientkiewicz is on the DL.

Padres: Placed 1B Phil Nevin on the 15-day DL with a strained muscle in his left side and recalled OF Ben Johnson from Class AAA Portland. . . .
