Cubs: 3B Aramis Ramirez was hit by a pitch on his left knee in the fifth inning and did not return to the field in the sixth. X-rays were negative and he has a deep bone bruise on the shin below the knee. He is day-to-day.

Marlins: Activated RHP Josh Beckett from the 15-day DL, making the announcement about two hours before his scheduled start against the Braves. To make room for Beckett, Florida optioned reliever John Riedling to Class AAA Albuquerque.

Padres: RHP Pedro Astacio signed a minor league contract with San Diego, nine days after he was released by the Rangers. He is scheduled to report to Class AAA Portland today. . . . Minor league IF Corey Smith cleared waivers and was sent outright to Class AA Mobile.

Pirates: LHP Zach Duke, one of Pittsburgh's most highly touted pitching prospects, will make his major league debut when he starts tomorrow against the Brewers. Duke is 12-3 with a 2.92 ERA for Class AAA Indianapolis this season.
