Twins: Sent RHP Scott Baker back to Class AAA Rochester. He was recalled earlier in the day and got the win in the second game of a doubleheader against the Tigers. 3B Terry Tiffee was recalled from Rochester.

Tigers: Sent RHP Justin Verlander to Class AA Erie. He was recalled earlier in the day and took the loss in the second game of a doubleheader against the Twins. LHP Vic Darensbourg was recalled from Class AAA Toledo.

Blue Jays: Recalled RHP David Bush from Class AAA Syracuse to start last night against the Royals.

Royals: Recalled RHP Kyle Snyder, a 1999 first-round pick, to start yesterday's game vs. the Blue Jays. The Royals optioned rookie LHP J.P. Howell to Class AAA Omaha. Howell, who began this season with Class A High Desert in the California League, was 1-4 with a 7.68 ERA in eight starts.

1983: The "Pine Tar" home run was hit by the Kansas City Royals' George Brett off New York P Rich Gossage at Yankee Stadium. Brett's shot came with two out in the top of the ninth to give the Royals a 5-4 lead. Brett's homer was ruled an out because the amount of pine tar exceeded what was allowed. After a protest by the Royals, the final out and the Yankees' half of the ninth was completed on Aug. 18.
