Athletics: CF Mark Kotsay missed his third straight game because of a sore back. Kotsay had an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed almost the same problem that sidelined him in 2003 with the Padres.

Red Sox: RF Trot Nixon, who strained his left oblique muscle swinging at a pitch Tuesday night, was put on the 15-day DL. LHP Lenny DiNardo was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket.

Tigers: Activated 2B Placido Polanco. Optioned Curtis Granderson to Class AAA Toledo. Polanco was acquired from the Phillies in June and played 27 games before going on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring.

Yankees: Signed RHP Hideo Nomo to a minor league contract. The 37-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Devil Rays. He was 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA. . . . Carl Pavano pitched five innings, allowing two runs -- one earned -- and two hits in a rehab start. Manager Joe Torre said Pavano would likely make another rehab start. . . . Jaret Wright is scheduled to make a rehab start Saturday. Wright has been sidelined since April 23 with a strained right shoulder.
